“Here is Wisdom”
“Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six” (Revelation 13:18 NASB-95). The apostle John said it is wise to try to determine who the Antichrist is from his number. Wisdom manifests itself in good behavior as shown in chapter three of the book of James:
13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the
13 gentleness of wisdom.
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie
14 against the truth.
15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good
17 fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.
18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
If Jesus manifested wisdom from above, you would expect the Antichrist to manifest demonic wisdom. Many tyrants have risen and their behavior soon became apparent, but the Antichrist may present more of a challenge. During his reign, “False Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24). It would be wise for us to prepare today so that we might be able to stand in that day.
Calculate the Number: Gematria is a cipher that assigns numerical values to the letters of the alphabet. Using the chart below, when the individual letters in the Greek word for Jesus, Ἰησοῦς10+8+200+70+400+200, are tallied, the sum is 888. Gematria can also be used as a kind of shorthand to represent numbers. For example, the number 144 in the Textus Receptus appears as ρμδ (Revelation 7:4), the number 12 as ιβ (Revelation 7:5-8), and the number 666 as χξϛ (Revelation 13:18). A number can also have a special meaning such as the Hebrew word “oz” עֹז meaning strength, whose tally is 77, considered a very spiritual number.

The gematria is a cipher that can contain a hidden meaning. The Greek gematria may reveal the identity of the Antichrist since the New Testament is in that language. IrenaeusIrenaeus (c. 130-202) was the bishop of Lyons in France. He was a systematic theologian and early Christian thinker. He is noted for refuting the heresy of Gnosticism. offered two suggestions – “Lateinos” (Λατεινος) for the Latins or Romans and “Teitan” (Τειταν) for Titan or TitusTitus Caesar Vespanianus was Roman emperor
from 79 to 81 AD. Titus Flavius Domitianus was
a Roman emperor from 81 to 96 AD., both of which tally to 666. The earliest attempts to determine the identity of the Antichrist centered around the Roman Empire.
The Hebrew gematria offers a noteworthy contribution. “NeronNero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was the fifth Roman emperor ruling from 54 to 68 AD. Caesar” (נרונ קסר) tallies to 666. An early fragmentPapyrus 115 is a badly mutilated fragment produced around 250 AD. of the book of Revelation stated the number of the beast was 616. If you drop off the נ from נרונ, “Neron Caesar” becomes “Nero Caesar” (נרו קסר), which tallies to 616. The Greek “GaiosGaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus,
nicknamed Caligula,was the third Roman
emperor ruling from 37 to 41 AD. Kaisar” (Γαιος Καισαρ) and “Divine Caesar” ( Καισαρ Θεος) both tally to 616. Irenaeus, who had access to early manuscripts, accepted 666 as the correct value.
The diminutive indicates a smaller size, such as the beast in the book of Revelation. This term is another name for the Antichrist, which the table below will clarify:

The phrase, “Who is like the beast (θηρίῷθηρίον, ου, τό — a little beast ✵
noun dative singular), and who is able to wage war with him?” (Revelation 13:4), appears to be a quotation. If the term beast is substituted with a term for a small animal, perhaps the above phrase might make more sense. The number 666 in the Pythagorean English Gematria is a fox. Therefore, in the future, someone might say, “Who is like the fox, and who is able to wage war with him?”
In Aesop’sAesop, born around 560 BC, was a former Greek
slave who is credited with writing many fables
each of which contains a moral lesson. Fables, the fox is clever, crafty, cunning, and mischievous. The fox is only a guess, but the character traits of the Antichrist must lie somewhere within this area. Other languages have developed numerologies, so perhaps the answer is in one of them.
The Man of Sin Approaches: What is happening in the world today? We are approaching a transitional period like the time of John the Baptist. The move then was from the law to grace, and it will soon be a move from grace to the Second Coming. The devil, “knowing that he has only a short time” (Revelation 12:12), will make war against those “who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus” (Revelation 12:17). The spirit of the Antichrist is already working in the world preparing the nations for the reign of the Antichrist.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked His disciples to watch and pray while He went a short distance and prayed (Matthew 26:36-37). Overcome by sleep, Peter, James, and John failed to keep watch for an hour. When Jesus had finished praying, He said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? … Get up, let us be going” (Matthew 26:45-46). There is a time to watch and pray, and there is a time when it is too late. Events in the world today should cause us to wake up and become vigilant. The three disciples who were closest to Jesus, who overheard Him as He prayed, represent the watchman in the church. Therefore let those who watch and pray remain awake and give warning of danger. May the verses found in Isaiah chapter sixty become real in our time:
1 Arise, shine; for your light has come,
1 And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 For behold, darkness will cover the earth
2 And deep darkness the peoples;
2 But the Lord will rise upon you,
2 And His glory will appear upon you.
Where is Wisdom
Job in his day also wondered where is wisdom, and in the twenty-eighth chapter of the book bearing his name he said:
12 But where can wisdom be found?
12 And where is the place of understanding?
13 Man does not know its value,
13 Nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 The deep says, “It is not in me.”
14 And the sea says, “It is not with me.”
15 Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it,
15 Nor can silver be weighed as its price.
28 And to man He (God) said, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
28 And to depart from evil is understanding.”
Wisdom is indeed a very precious thing since there is so little of it in our country today.
